At KFPS, Mathematics is being strengthened through the principles of the Science of Learning, with a clear focus on explicit, structured instruction to support all learners.
Using PR1ME Mathematics, our teaching follows a consistent I Do, We Do, You Do gradual release model, ensuring concepts are carefully modelled, practised together, and then applied independently. Lessons are designed around the Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract (CPA) approach, allowing students to first explore concepts with hands-on materials, then represent their thinking visually, and finally move to symbolic understanding.
Across the school, teachers embed daily reviews and targeted fluency tasks to build automaticity and reduce cognitive load, ensuring key skills are retained over time.
In P–2 classrooms, Bond Blocks are used intentionally to develop strong number sense and part–part–whole understanding, laying a solid foundation for addition and subtraction.
This consistent, evidence-informed approach is creating confident mathematicians who can explain their reasoning and apply their knowledge with increasing independence at KFPS.
